HS Football Week 6- A Record Broken, A Record Tied
An amazing Week 6 in High School Football. I got the opportunity to broadcast a record broken and another record tied on 2 consecutive nights.
Arkeel Newsome, Ansonia High School, became the State leader in career rushing yardage. Newsome needed 291 yards to break the record formerly held by another Ansonia running back, Alex Thomas, who went on to have a great career at Yale. Thomas was on hand to see Newsome break his record. Newsome has now rushed for over 8,300 yards and will just keep adding to his own record. I think he can rush for 10,000 yards. He is an outstanding athlete and is headed for UCONN.
The next night I covered the Xavier-West Haven game. This was one of the best games I've seen in a quite a long time. Two heavyweight boxers slugging it out in the middle of the ring. The game went into overtime and West Haven won the game 35-34. Lost in the middle of all of this was the fact that West Haven Head Coach Ed McCarthy tied the state record for career wins. It was career victory 321 and it tied him with former Ledyard coach Bill Mignault.
McCarthy can break the state record this week if he defeats Hamden.
We enter Week 7 with so many big games on the schedule. Many will have Playoff implications.
New Canaan at Staples, Seymour at Derby, VR/Old Lyme at Morgan, Hand at Shelton, Guilford at North Haven, Hillhouse at Foran, West Haven at Hamden, Ridgefield at Darien are just a few of the big games highlighting the schedule.
Week 7 - 1 record can be broken - will there be any more - we'll find out.
